Union County Shannon Farm Site Selected for Duke Energy Site Readiness Program

The 140-acre Shannon Farm site in Mineral Springs has been selected to participate in Duke Energy’s 2014 Site Readiness Program to prepare the property for potential industrial development. The Site Readiness Program is designed to help communities served by the utility compete for new investments and jobs.
The Shannon Farm site is undeveloped farmland strategically framed by Highway 75 at McNeely Road, with rail access near the back of the property.
“The Shannon Farm site is a very important location that advances our goal to diversify the industrial base across all our communities,” said Chris Platé, executive director of economic development for Union County. “Union County has excellent rail capabilities within its borders, and our office is preparing sites along the railways to best take advantage of this asset.”
Duke Energy has hired McCallum Sweeney, a nationally known consulting firm, to conduct a site study. McCallum Sweeney has been instrumental in many high-profile industrial locations and expansions. Duke Energy will work with professional land use planners to develop conceptual plans for the site. Duke Energy, McCallum Sweeney and the planners will present all recommendations to community leaders later this year.
"The Mineral Springs town council has long been committed to seeing a major corporate headquarters or clean industrial facility on the Shannon Farm property. Inclusion in the Duke Energy Site Readiness Program will enhance the site's desirability and development potential and help bring that vision closer to reality," said Rick Becker III, mayor of Mineral Springs.
After the site readiness inventory is complete, Duke’s Business Development team will actively market the property nationwide to companies looking to expand or relocate their operations.
“Duke Energy’s approach to economic development is unique in the utility industry. Not only do we have our own economic development professionals assigned to various regions in the state, we also have a separate business development team. That team recruits large national and international companies to our service areas,” said Tammy Whaley, Duke Energy’s economic development manager in Union County.
Ideal properties for Duke Energy’s Site Readiness Program are 75 acres or larger and served by the utility. A qualified site can be suited for a single, large industrial facility, data center or potential industrial park (multi-tenant site).
